IT Division
The IT Division was started way back in 1948 as “the Cypher Division”. It then used a secret code system in communicating with Sri Lanka missions abroad.
At present, the Cypher Division (IT Division) functions as the center for telephone/ fax/ e-mail/ internet communication between the Ministry of External Affairs and its fifty five missions abroad, as well as Government and other institutions in Sri Lanka through the prompt inward and outward transmission of messages.
Apart from the IT officers serving in the Division there are number of IT officers operating from Sri Lanka Missions Abroad. Therefore, virtually the Division is operated round the clock and throughout the year. The allocated staff works on a shift basis from 6.30 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. on weekdays and from 7.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. in weekends and holidays.
Computing Activities
The ministry has improved its communication system through the use of Information Technology (IT). The Local Area Network (LAN) system provides access to all the divisions of the Ministry. Access to the Internet and e- mail is being provided for divisions that require such facilities.
