KEY ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT BY THE DIVISION

United Nations:

The Division coordinates with the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in New York and other Missions accredited to UN Agencies based in Geneva, Vienna, Nairobi, Rome and Paris regarding interests of Sri Lanka and to actively participate in the work of the United Nations, namely through the General Assembly, its main committees, the Economic and Social Council, UNESCO, UN HABITAT and UNEP etc., thereby enhancing the profile of Sri Lanka and its relations with other countries.

Multilateral Affairs:

Activities related to other multilateral fora such as the International Organization for Migration (IOM), International Labour Organization (ILO), World Health Organization (WHO), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Maritime Organization IMO), and other intergovernmental bodies that deal with important technical issues. The Division coordinates with the National Focal Points to facilitate representation by Sri Lanka.

Human Rights:

All matters related to Human Rights are dealt with at the Geneva based Human Rights Council and other special procedures are coordinated by the UN division. This involves producing periodical reports on thematic areas related to Human Rights. The representations made to the Human Rights Council at its sessions since the end of the terrorist conflict in Sri Lanka, on matters related to alleged human rights violations have been a priority area.

Conference:

The division facilitates hosting international conferences in Sri Lanka by UN and other International Non- Governmental Organizations as well as local agencies
